Jury awards $434,000 to woman who met husband online

BALTIMORE (AP) — A federal jury Thursday awarded a woman $434,000 in damages after she sued an Internet matchmaking service that introduced her to her abusive husband. 

In what was described as the first lawsuit of its kind in the country, Nataliya Fox of Loundon County, Va., sued Encounters International of Bethesda, alleging fraud and negligence.

The Ukrainian woman met James Fox through the international matchmaking agency. They married in November 1998, less than three months after they met. He was 34; she was 27.
